Keeping in mind our ancient handloom legacy, National Handloom Day is celebrated every year on August 7 to honour our handloom weavers and to showcase the country's rich handloom industry. This year let's commemorate this day by taking a look at 7 international brands that have incorporated Indian weaves in their collection following the global success of these textiles.
International brands that have used Indian textiles in their collections
1) Burberry
The UK luxury fashion brand Burberry embraced Indian handloom fabrics and textiles first when they refashioned their iconic trench coat using Maheshwari Silk. The rich history of this Maheshwari handloom dates back to 18th-century Madhya Pradesh when the weavers first combined silk and cotton yarn to create this unique fabric for sarees.
2) Valentino
The Italian fashion house is known to use the fine-grade cashmere wool fabric 'pashmina' in its coveted winter collection. The luxurious wool fabric is made from the undercoats of Changthangi goats, which are native to the Northern Himalayas of India, particularly Kashmir, and Nepal.
3) Louis Vuitton
The French luxury brand Louis Vuitton experimented with the beautiful Benarasi silk fabric and designed saree dresses with the rich fabric for their 2010 Diwali collection. The brand specially hired Indian craftsmen to weave custom fabric woven with the classic Louis Vuitton logo along with monogrammed flowers and traditional Indian motifs.
