Zeenat Aman questions why 'aunty' is considered a derogatory term
Actor and writer, Zeenat Aman is using Instagram as not just a medium to post photographs but also to send out powerful messages out to the world. She is using her knowledge and experiences in shutting down trolls in a very unique way.
Ever since veteran actor Zeenat Aman has come on Instagram, she has been slamming the old age stereotypes. Whether its about her being under-valued by some companies and taken for granted or being called old and an aunty.
Today, she questioned and criticised the 'genius' who thought aunty should be considered as a derogatory term. We have seen many times on multiple reality shows where contestants called ladies older than them 'aunty' to offend them.
From Bollywood stars Tanisha Mukerji to Shamita Shetty who came on Bigg Boss and were called aunty by their younger peers, it has been used as an insult. We see women in their 30s getting upset when their nieces and nephews call them aunty. They teach them young to call them by their names or didi.
Well, Bollywood actor Zeenat Aman thinks otherwise. In her Instagram post Zeenat can be seen wearing a really cool t-shirt that says aunty. Writing on that picture, Zeenat says, "Which genius decided that ¡°aunty¡± is a derogatory term? It certainly wasn¡¯t me. Where would we be without those ubiquitous older women who make our lives comfortable and warm and secure. The Indian aunty is everywhere, and she doesn¡¯t even have to be related to you. She provides a shoulder to lean on, an ear to your problems, a hot meal, a silly joke, a welcoming home, a righteous scolding, a pearl of wisdom. When you hear the word ¡°aunty¡± you can imagine a frumpy nag, or you can truly think about the older women in your life and see what I see. Me? I¡¯m an aunty and proud. It¡¯s a tag I¡¯ll happily wear on my sleeve, or in this case, across my chest."
Zeenat says she is happy to have this label and is proud of it. She explained the real meaning of aunty and it is someone who you can lean on, feel secure, happy, warm. Explaining how Indian aunties can be, Zeenat says you will always get a welcoming home, a good hot meal and an ear to your problems.
Zeenat made her Instagram debut in February, 2023 and has been giving us an insight to her filmy life in the 70s, the fun anecdotes from the past and helping women break stereotype and glass ceilings with empowering messages and quotes.
On the work front, Zeenat will be seen making a comeback alongside Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar in The Royals.
