Perk Up: Here's How To Stop Feeling Tired All The Time

It's an epidemic. We are always tired. Even if we sleep for 12 hours straight! Why do we wake up and feel drained out? Is it because we are working hard and partying harder?

"Well, I wouldn't label it tiredness but fatigue that feels like you are burnt out emotionally, physically and mentally, constantly," says Dr. R.K Choudhary, General Physician at Paras Hospital, Gurgaon.

So how can we fight this fatigue, and not let it come in the way of things we once love doing but now are too tired to do them? Below, are seven strategies to help you handle fatigue effectively and make sure your seven to eight hours of sleep feel like exactly that.

1. Take walks.

Take a 10-minute walk. We know it's basic but just going out for a stroll in the fresh air can serve as one of the most potent energy boosters. Walking allows your rib cage to open up better, allowing you to breathe more deeply. As a result, your pulse rate goes high and more oxygen is sent to your brain, making you more active and a little less tired.

2. Say goodbye to caffeine.

While a great cup of coffee can provide you with that much need boost of energy but Dr. R.K. Choudhary believes otherwise. "In order to reap in all benefits of caffeine, decrease your consumption of it. Stick to one cup a day or when you really need it. Consuming a lot of caffeine regularly can make you experience energy troughs as well."

3. Pick healthy food over oily takeout.

What most people don't realise is that feeling tired is not a direct result of a lack of sleep. The way you feel, move and eat, all come together, to influence how tired you are. And that is why, in order to feel full of energy, you need to have adequate amounts of veggies and fruits in order to get those vitamins and minerals that make you feel energetic and superb. Can't figure out how? Just remember, you are eating a healthy meal when you can see at least three colors of vegetables on your plate.

4. Exercise.

Yes, in order to feel energetic, you need to spend some energy. And we don't mean this in a way where you have to overwork or overtire yourself. It could be a yoga class or an active 20-minute work-out. By the end of it, you will sense an immediate high in your energy levels.

5. Sleep well.

Getting enough sleep is crucial. And for all of us who love to sleep, it's quite puzzling why we don't sleep a lot. You are advised to not consume heavy meals before nap time and supposed to switch off your tablet, kindle, iPad, phone or any other gadget one hour before you hit the bed. Get comfortable bedding and light candles that will help you sleep sooner. And once you are in the habit of sleeping a solid eight hours, you will not be so tired.

Feeling tired is an immediate result of how much we hustle. But don't stop hustling, focus on taking better care of yourself.
