Because Nobody's Talking About 15 Coalminers Trapped In Meghalaya, This Standup Comedian Did

For the past 28 days, 15 coal miners are trapped inside a mine in Meghalaya. And just like every other issue from the North-East, a region that constitutes over 8 percent of India's total area, this news also just came and went. No Facebook campaigns were run intending to speed up the rescue process and no #savemeghalayaminers was trending on Twitter.

As a fast-developing nation, we're equipped with the resources required to rescue these miners. So what is it that we're lacking?

Clearly the apathy & compassion.

One comedian decided to draw people's attention towards the dismal state of affairs in the north east.

Abhineet Mishra, a native of Meghalaya, is a standup comedian. Recently, he performed in front of empty chairs, willingly of course. The intentn was to draw a parallel between his show with no audience and the government's attention to Meghalaya which is conspicuous by its continued absence.

In his video, he explains how nobody, from people and media to social media, is talking about saving the lives of the innocent miners who are trapped in a 370-feet deep illegal coalmine. Misra rightly points out how the media and people are busy discussing relatively unimportant issues and there's no hullabaloo over government's lax attitude towards the miners.

Misra's video can't be brushed aside as a rant. It's a grim reality of our state of affairs. North-east has always received a step-motherly treatment by the government and the latest incident only corroborates this fact.
