26/11 Plotter LeT Terrorist Sajid Mir Reportedly Critical After Being Poisoned In Pakistani Jail
Sajid Mir was sentenced to 15 years in jail on a terror-financing case by an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan. Mir, a top-level commander of the LeT, is a designated terrorist and has a $5 million on him.
A key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Sajid Mir, is reportedly battling for his life after he was allegedly poisoned.
According to unconfirmed reports, Mir was poisoned inside the Central Jail of Dera Ghazi Khan and has been on ventilator support now.
Why Sajid Mir was jailed
Mir, a top-level commander of the LeT, is a designated terrorist and has a U.S. bounty of $5 million on him.
Believed to be in his mid-40s, Mir was sentenced to 15 years in jail on a terror-financing case by an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan.
However, many believe that Pakistan was forced to act against Mir and jail him due to the country being placed on the grey list of FATF, an intergovernmental organisation that tracks terror financing and money laundering.
Months after Mir was jailed, in October 2022, FATF removed Pakistan from the Grey List due to what is described as significant improvements in the overall anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing framework.
What is his role in 26/11?
Born in Lahore, Mir is wanted in India for his role in the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.
According to the FBI, Mir allegedly served as the chief planner of the attacks, directing preparations and reconnaissance, and was one of the Pakistan-based controllers during the attacks.
What are other charges against Mir?
Additionally, Mir allegedly conspired to commit a terrorist attack against a newspaper and its employees in Denmark between 2008 and 2009.
Mir was indicted in the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, Chicago, Illinois, on April 21, 2011, and was charged with conspiracy to injure property of foreign government; providing material support to terrorists; killing a citizen outside of the U.S. and aiding and abetting; and bombing of places of public use. An arrest warrant was issued on April 22, 2011.
How China helped Mir
In June this year, China had blocked a move to designate Mir as a ¡°global terrorist¡± by the U.N.
The proposal was moved by the U.S. and co-designated by India to blacklist Mir under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the U.N. Security Council as a global terrorist and subject him to assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.
Why Pakistani terrorists are getting killed mysteriously
Mir is the latest Pakistani terrorist wanted by India who has been targeted mysteriously.
In October, Shahid Latif, the mastermind behind the 2016 terror attack on the Indian Air Force Base in Pathankot, was killed under mysterious circumstances in Sialkot, Pakistan.
In November, Akram Ghazi, a Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, was gunned down in Pakistan¡¯s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In September, Abu Qasim Kashmiri from Jammu, the alleged mastermind of the Dhangri attack in Rajouri, was killed by unidentified gunmen in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
