Aarey Is Known As 'Chota Kashmir', Now It Has Become Like One: Netizens After Section 144 Imposition
Protests are erupting both online and offline after the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) began cutting of hundreds of trees in the Aarey Colony where a proposed car shed is to be set up.
The MMRCL began the cutting of trees on Friday night to clear the land.
But the action has not gone down well with the environmentalists who had been campaigning to save the greenery, often referred to as the lungs of Mumbai.
As the protests began gaining momentum there was a massive deployment of police to blockade the area and Section 144 has been imposed there.
#SaveAarey A great salute to those who stood for these trees. If trees can speak, they would curse us for generations. Time to take all those who support this car shed on #Aarey colony to elementary school. Don't give up. Let's raise our voice even louder than before. #fayedsouza pic.twitter.com/hYmjFnL2dV

In a city prone to floods during monsoon rains and at a time when #ClimateStrike has captured global narrative, it is painful to see 2646 trees being cut in #AareyForest, considered Mumbai's green lung and home to 30 tribal villages.#SaveAarey pic.twitter.com/IJxjIglrAm
Hundreds of Mumbaikars have gathered to stop the massacre of #AareyForest and facing the wrath of the police.

Authorities have already started cutting trees in Aarey after the order passed by the BHC today. Citizens are reaching Aaarey forest to stop this. I request Mumbaikars to reach and resist this move right now. #SaveAareyForest #SaveAarey pic.twitter.com/Ng5Yfv61gu

Go around the world and speak of Climate Change but when you return start clearing off forests and trees.

The @ShivSena ¡®s @sheetalmhatre1 ji & Shubha Raul ji at Aarey. Even @prabhu_suneel ji has been standing up for it with the citizens. Wonder why @MumbaiMetro3 is treating Mumbaikars like criminals and not listening to sensible demand of sustainable development. https://t.co/ZdjF8ttKTk
