The Bengaluru civic agency has prohibited animal slaughter and sale of meat on Sri Rama Navami on April 10.
¡°There will be a blanket ban on the slaughterhouses, animal slaughter and the sale of meat on Sri Rama Navami,¡± the joint director of the animal husbandry department of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike said in the order,
The order is based on BBMP chief commissioner Gaurav Gupta's circular on April 3.
A BBMP official said every year on Sri Rama Navami besides Gandhi Jayanti, Sarvodaya Day and other religious events, there is a ban on the sale of meat and animal slaughter.
There is a blanket ban on these practices at least eight days a year on various occasions, he added.
BBMP was recently in the news after the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department in Karnataka asked the civic body to direct all slaughterhouses and chicken shops in the city to ensure that animals are mandatorily stunned before they are slaughtered.
In Delhi too
The development also comes at a time when the order by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Mayor Mukesh Suryan for the closure of meat shops during the 9-day period of Navaratri festival from April 2-11 is already causing controversy.
SDMC order yet to be implemented
Though the Mayor had written to the SDMC commissioner on April 4 to ensure that all the meat shops under the civic body remain shut, the order has not been implemented.
Though some meat shops under SDMC limits including many in INA market had remained shut on April 5, a day after the Mayor wrote to the Commissioner, most of them have now re-opened.
Sanjay Kumar, a meat shop owner in INA Market said that they have not received any written order or directions from the Municipal Corporation to close their shops.
"Even during the Covid times, whenever the corporation wanted to shut the market, they used to send a written order, but this time there was no such information," INA Traders Association member Ramesh Bhutani said.
It was not just SDMC, even East Delhi Mayor Shyam Sunder Aggarwal wanted meat shops to remain shut during Navratri.
EDMC Mayor appeals
He had "appealed" to traders to keep meat shops closed during Navratri or at least on the last three days of the festival, even as authorities said "no official order" has been issued in this connection.
Aggarwal also claimed that during Navratri, "90 percent people do not consume non-vegetarian food".
