Delhi Sees Dip In COVID Cases But Single-day Death Toll Touches 43, Highest Since June

Delhi on Thursday reported 43 Covid deaths, which is the highest number of deaths due to the virus since June 10 last year when 44 people had died. The national capital logged 12,306 new Covid cases, which is 10.72 per cent lower than Wednesday's number (13,785).

But, the Delhi government has recommended lifting of certain curbs and has sought LG's nod. As the cases dip, the govt wants to lift weekend curfew and end odd even for shops, allowing them to open on all days.

The AAP government has reportedly also suggested that private offices may be permitted to call 50% staff as opposed to the current 100% work from home.

Current curbs in place

Stringent curbs, including a weekend curfew, have been put in place in the national capital as part of the colour-coded Graded Response Action Plan to check the spread of the COVID infection in markets, industries, offices and public transport.

Last week, Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain had suggested that the government may consider easing restrictions if Covid-19 cases dropped below 15,000-mark.

He later said that though the positivity rate has gone down, it is ¡°not low enough that we can relax the Covid restrictions¡±.

The weekend curfew imposed in view of rise in Covid-19 cases will be in place from 10pm today and continue till 5am on Monday, unless the LG grants permission to the Delhi government's proposal.

The number of infections in the national capital has seen a marked decline over the last few days, except for Wednesday when the capital saw a spike. On Tuesday, the city registered 11,684 cases, on Monday, it was 12,587 cases, on Sunday it was 18,286, on Saturday the figure was 20,718 while on Friday it was 24,383.

Covid situation in Delhi

As per the latest health bulletin data, Delhi's single-day cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) witnessed a dip recently after as many as 12,306 people tested positive.

According to government data, the number of active cases in the city stands at 68,730. Of these, 53,593 patients are in home isolation and 2,539 are admitted to hospitals.

Among the patients admitted to hospitals, 844 are admitted in ICU. 903 patients are on oxygen support including 152 on ventilators. 12,891 dedicated Covid beds in hospitals are still vacant out of a total of 15,589 beds. The recovery rate stands at 94.64 per cent.
