Double-Decker Bus Falls Into Canal Near Agra As Driver Allegedly Dozes Off Mid Way, 29 Killed
A double-decker bus fell into a canal near Agra leaving most passengers dead and over a dozen severely injured. The driver of the Delhi-bound bus reportedly dozed off and lost control of the bus which hit a divider before falling into the canal 40-feet deep through the gap between two flyovers. The Uttar Pradesh Roadways has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the families of those who died in the accident.
A trip to Delhi turned out to be fatal for at least 29 people travelling from Lucknow. Their double-decker bus fell into a canal near Agra leaving most passengers dead and over a dozen severely injured.
According to reports, it was an Uttar Pradesh State Roadways Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus.
The accident happened at Etmadpur in Agra in the early hours of Monday.
Even though the exact reason behind the mishap is yet to be ascertained, initial reports suggest that it could have been a human error.
The driver of the Delhi-bound bus reportedly dozed off and lost control of the bus which hit a divider before falling into the canal, 40-feet deep, through the gap between two flyovers on the expressway.
According to the police, there were a total of 44 people on the ill-fated bus at the time of the accident.
Police said that rescue operations are still on and there have been 29 casualties so far, adding that the injured have been shifted to hospital.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath and instructed the officials to expedite rescue work and provide proper treatment to the injured.

The rising number of accidents on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway has been for long a concern for the authorities.
The Yamuna Expressway has reported 127 deaths in 247 road accidents this year so far, while 110 deaths were reported in 659 road accidents during the entire year of 2018.
Last week, the Uttar Pradesh government said drivers will have to pay a fine for speeding if they covered the 302 km-stretch from the Lucknow toll plaza to Agra in less than three hours.
