Since the new Motor Vehicle Act¡¯s provisions came into place on September 1, cases of mammoth challans being imposed by traffic police make headlines every day.
According to the new rules, riders cannot wear ¡®hawaii chappals¡¯, flip flops or slippers while riding a two-wheeler with gears.
A mentioned reason for this rule states that such footwear can cause difficulty to the rider in changing gears or even cause a loss of friction, causing a slip when the two-wheeler is coming to a halt.
Several penalties for violating traffic rules have been hiked up to 5 times.
The new law as mentioned in the Gazette notifies a penalty of Rs 1000 if any of the passengers in a vehicle is not wearing a seat belt. It is interesting to note that while the law was already mentioned under the Motor Vehicle Act, it was never really imposed by the traffic police on the roads.
Here are some of the revised penalties mentioned under the Motor Vehicle Act:
1. Over Speeding - Rs 1000 to Rs 4000
2. Driving without insurance - Rs 2000 to Rs 4000 and/or imprisonment
3. Driving without helmet - Rs 1000 + 3-months license suspension
4. Under-age driving - Up to Rs 25,000 and 3-year imprisonment
5. Disobedience of the orders of authorities - Rs 2000
6. Unauthorised use of vehicles without a licence - Rs 5000
7. Driving despite disqualification - Rs 10,000
8. Dangerous driving - Rs 5000
9. Drunken driving - Rs 10,000
10. Driving without seat belts - Rs 1000
11. Overloading of vehicles - Rs 20,000
