Haryana Woman Who Returned From Canada To Marry Lover Shot Dead By Him, Crime Solved After Nearly A Year
Monica, a native of Haryana's Rohtak who had gone to Canada last year to pursue higher studies, was murdered by her boyfriend in June 2022.
The Haryana Police have said that they have solved the case of a woman from the state who had been missing for nearly a year after her skeletal remains were discovered.
According to the police, Monica, a native of Haryana's Rohtak who had gone to Canada last year to pursue higher studies, was murdered by her boyfriend in June 2022.
Family unaware of marriage, murder
Police said that the woman who went to Canada on a student visa in January had returned to India without the knowledge of her family to marry her boyfriend.
Her boyfriend, according to the police, was one Sunil, who was already married to another woman and had two kids with her.
Sunil and Monica were neighbours when she lived in Gumad village in Sonipat, where she was living with her aunt, and she was aware that he was already married.
After reaching India in May last year, Monica married Sunil at a Ghaziabad temple.
Killed a month after marriage
But the marriage did not last long, and Monica was shot dead by Sunil in June.
Police said Sunil murdered Monica in June 2022 and buried her body in a 10-foot-deep ditch in the fields of a farmhouse along the Garhi Jhanjhara road in Ganaur on June 29.
Unaware of Monica's marriage or death, the family approached the police after they had failed to reach her over the phone for a long time.
Accused lied about marital status
"During our investigations, it came to the fore that between January 2022 and May 2022, the woman made a couple of trips to India," CIA-II Bhiwani in-charge Ravindra Kumar told PTI.
"Their marriage was also registered before a court, where the accused concealed the fact that he was already married," he said.
According to the police Sunil who was arrested from Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, admitted to killing Monica by shooting at her head twice.
Wanted to settle abroad
Sunil, who had a history of crimes, reportedly got closer to Monica in the hope that he will be able to settle abroad.
"Sunil did not enjoy a good marital relationship with his wife and wanted to settle abroad. He had thought if Monica gets Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada, he, too, could move there... However, when he felt his plan was not materialising, he murdered Monica," Kumar said.
Based on Sunil's admission, the police unearthed the skeletal remains of the victim from a farmhouse that is said to belong to the accused on Tuesday.
The police officer said the skeletal remains have been sent for post-mortem examination to Sonipat Civil Hospital while the procedure for conducting a DNA test was also underway.
