'Fortunate to be an Indian': How Ratan Tata once responded to calls for him to be awarded Bharat Ratna
Ratan Tata was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour, in 2000, and the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian honour, in 2008. While he was not awarded the Bharat Ratna, many have long associated India¡¯s top civilian honour, which incidentally rhymes with his name.
In the death of industrialist Ratan Tata, India has lost a true gem, someone who made a lasting impact on the lives of millions of people. Beyond his role as the Chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata was also known for his philanthropy and support of various social causes, including animal welfare.

How Ratan Tata responded to a social media campaign
In fact, in 2021, there was a widespread demand on social media, with #BharatRatnaForRatanTata, and thousands of users called for Ratan Tata to be conferred with the Bharat Ratna.
However, Ratan Tata himself responded to the campaign on social media, while turning it down.
"While I appreciate the sentiments expressed by a section of social media in terms of an award, I would humbly like to request that such campaigns be discontinued," Ratan Tata said in a post on X.
"Instead, I consider myself fortunate to be an Indian and to try and contribute to India's growth and prosperity," he added.

Shiv Sena demands Bharat Ratna for Ratan Tata
Following the death of Ratan Tata on Wednesday, Shiv Sena urged Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to propose his name for the Bharat Ratna Award.
¡°Recognising Ratan Tata with this prestigious award would not only honour his legacy but also inspire countless others to follow in his footsteps and contribute positively to our nation¡¯s socio-economic landscape,¡± Shiv Sena¡¯s social media chief Rahul Kanal stated in a letter to CM Shinde.
If awarded, Ratan Tata would be the second member of the Tata family after JRD Tata to be honoured with the Bharat Ratna.
