The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that most parts of the country will likely experience above-normal minimum temperatures in December.IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the maximum temperature is likely to be above normal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that most parts of the country will likely experience above-normal minimum temperatures in December.
"During December 2023, minimum temperatures are most likely to be above normal over most parts of the country. And maximum temperatures for December 2023 are likely to be above normal over most parts of the country except some areas of central India and North India," the IMD said.
What IMD said about this winter
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the maximum temperatures for December are likely to be above normal over most parts of the country except for some areas of central and northern India, adding that above-normal minimum temperatures are also forecasted for most parts.
Mohapatra also said the occurrence of cold waves over the country's north, northwest, central, east and northeast parts during the upcoming winter (December to February 2024) is likely to remain below normal.
Why this winter is above-normal
Above-normal temperatures were widely expected this winter due to the El Nino factor.
The IMD said that the global mean near-surface temperature in 2023 (up to October) was around 1.40 ? 0.12 ¡ãC above the 1850-1900 average.
"Based on the data to October, it is virtually certain that 2023 will be the warmest year in the 174-year observational record, surpassing the previous joint warmest years, 2016 at 1.29 ? 0.12 ¡ãC above the 1850-1900 average and 2020 at 1.2710.13 ¡ãC. The past nine years, 2015-2023, will be the nine warmest years on record," IMD said.
When will El Nino subside
The weather agency further said that the all India Mean temperature was record highest value since 1901 in the month of August, September and November and southwest monsoon season and the second highest in February 2023.
According to IMD, El Ni?o is favoured through Northern Hemisphere in spring 2024, with chances gradually decreasing from the winter through the spring, and a transition to ENSO-neutral is anticipated in May-July 2024.
What is the rain prediction for December?
On monthly rainfall forecast for December, Mohapatra said it is most likely to be above normal across the country.
"Monthly rainfall for December 2023 over the South Peninsular India consisting of five meteorological subdivisions (Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema, Kerala and Mahe and South Interior Karnataka) is most likely to be normal (69-131 per cent of Long Period Average (LPA))," he added.
"Above-normal rainfall is most likely over most parts of the northwest, adjoining areas of central and east India and some areas of extreme south peninsular India. The below-normal rainfall is likely over many parts of northeast India, north peninsular India and adjoining areas of central India," IMD further stated.
