Amid an increase in cases of attacks on humans by pet dogs across the country, the central government has directed states to ban the sale and breeding of 23 ferocious breeds.
According to the Department of Animal Husbandry 23 breeds of dogs, including mixed and cross breeds have been banned in the country.

Banned dog breeds in India
These are Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boerboel Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog Caucasian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd Dog, Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Mastiffs, Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf Dogs, Canario, Akbash Dog, Moscow Guard Dog, Cane Corso and Bandog.
"...the above dog breeds, including crossbreeds, shall be prohibited for import, breedings, selling as pet dogs and other purposes," the letter said, quoting the recommendations of the expert panel.

In a letter dated March 12 to chief secretaries of all states and UTs, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying also said that these breeds of dogs, which have already been kept as pets, should be sterilised to prevent further breeding.
Can't renew license for these breeds
The Centre's Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has asked local bodies and state-level departments of animal husbandry not to issue any license or permit for the sale and breeding of banned dog breeds.

Some states had already banned them
It should be noted that several states including Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have already banned the sale and breeding of most of these dogs as pets.
In December the Delhi High Court had given the Central Government three months to decide on a ban and cancel the licence to keep ¡°dangerous¡± dog breeds as pets.
What dog owners and animal rights groups say
The move to ban ferocious breeds has been opposed by dog owners who claim that the pets are like their family members.
However, animal rights groups have pointed out that such breeds including many of them are not used to climatic conditions in India and are housed and abused in breeding farms.
