Mewada, the mastermind behind this theft hatched his plan after watching the Bollywood movie ¡®Special 26¡¯; which was itself inspired by The Opera House Heist of 1987. According to the police the gang, which was made up of his 7 friends, was also trained by him.
After entering the house, posing as IT officials, and collecting the bounty the men asked Sarvaiya to accompany them to their office. But after halting on the Western Expressway on the pretext of taking a tea break they asked him to directly report at the headquarters and left. Sarvaiya grew suspicious and contacted Charkop police station where he lodged a complaint.
What led to Mewada¡¯s downfall were his constant calls to his Uncle, in which he kept demanding more money. He was promptly arrested and during the interrogation he finally confessed his crime and revealed the identity of his fellow mates.
