What Karauli Cop Told Rajasthan CM After He Got Promotion For Saving Lives During Violence

The communal violence that erupted in Rajasthan's Karauli during a procession last week is continuing to cause political ripples, but the actions of a brave policeman during the clash have attracted attention.

Shamli SSP Sukirti Madhav Mishra on Monday posted a photo on Twitter of a constable running with a kid in his arms as houses around him burned. The constable in the picture has been identified as 31-year-old Netresh Sharma, who took the baby from two women who were trapped amid the communal clashes in Karauli and ran through fire to save the child.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday praised Sharma for showing courage and carrying out his duties while risking his own life during the violence in the city.

Gehlot, then informed Sharma that he has asked top officials to promote him to ¡®Head Constable¡¯. In a clip of the interaction shared by the CM, Sharma can be heard thanking Gehlot and saying, ¡°It was my duty, which I fulfilled.¡±

Gehlot responded, ¡°Everyone has their duties but the way you have done work by risking your life, it is praiseworthy. And you deserve to be congratulated for showing a lot of courage.¡± The CM also said that he¡¯d like to meet Sharma whenever he¡¯s in Jaipur.

Sharing his experience with Dainik Bhaskar, Sharma said, he ran through the flames and entered the house because duty is of utmost importance.

He said he was providing protection to the procession by leading the way on a motorcycle patrol. Suddenly, when the stone pelting began, he rushed back and found two people sitting on the road. They had been injured and they requested him to take them to hospital which he did.

The policeman further said that shops were set on fire and cops were busy dousing the flames and rescuing people.

Mishra's post has garnered over 4,000 retweets and over 31,000 likes and counting.

Netizens have showered the officer with praises, including the Rajasthan police who tweeted "Salute to the spirit of constable Netresh Sharma".

Meanwhile, curfew has been imposed in Karauli city after communal tension broke out following stone-pelting at a motorcycle rally passing through a Muslim-dominated area on Nav Samvatsar, the first day of the new year under the Hindu calendar on Saturday, officials said.

More than 20 people sustained injuries after the violence led to the arson of shops and houses, while at least 13 people have been arrested and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to look into the incident.

Gehlot had on Monday accused the BJP of attempting to mislead people over the Karauli violence.

Referring to violence in Karauli and BJP national president J.P. Nadda's visit to Sawai Madhopur, Gehlot said, ¡°They (BJP leaders) come to set fire. They are setting the whole country on fire... He came and fire erupted. They are creating such an atmosphere.¡±
