After registering initial success in Kerala's Thrissur, the women-only COVID-19 bike-patrolling units will soon be deployed across the state for the efficient plugging of the coronavirus outbreak.
The state will deploy women officers to guard the quarantine centres, enforcing lockdown restrictions and punishing the violators of social distancing.
The special women-only bike squad was formed back in April and was functional in some areas.
The officials are provided with colour-coded helmets with a priority duty being lockdown enforcement along with helping senior citizens, women and children.
This new squad is a part of the Janamaithri Suraksha Project of Kerala Police that was launched with an aim to effectively bridge the gap between police and public.
State director general of police Loknath Behera said the step was announced after evaluating the success rate of women officers in the state who have been at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic.
¡°Daredevil riders have shown what women power is. They are in constant touch with people in quarantine and boost their confidence, at the same time they are tough with violators. They registered several cases in a few days. They handle the situation with care and compassion,¡± said the DGP.
The Kerala Police is now set to expand the patrol squad to other districts and expansion of teams for COVID-19 management.
