Robin Minz is the first person from a tribal community to get an IPL contract. The 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Gumla district was pocketed by the Gujarat Titans for a record INR 3.6 crore.
When Robin Minz from Jharkhand was picked up by Gujarat Titans in the auctions he created history by becoming the first person from a tribal community to get an IPL contract.
The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter from Gumla district who had a base price of Rs 20 lakhs was pocketed by the Gujarat Titans for a record INR 3.6 crore.
Father works as airport security guard
The 21-year-old comes from a humble background and his father Francis Xavier Minz, an ex-armyman still works as a security guard at the Birsa Munda International Airport in Ranchi.
Like other aspiring sportspersons in the state, Minz also idolised the biggest sporting personality Jharkhand has ever created - MS Dhoni.
Started with bat carved by father
But it was his father Francis who was a part of the Indian Army¡¯s 9 Bihar Regiment, who discovered his son's Cricket talent at a young age and gave him his first bat, -- carved out of a log.
And as Francis, who himself was a sportsperson, who played Football when he was young, realised how good his son was with the bat, he went all out within his limits to support his talent.
As Minz got better and better in his game, both his family and coach were confident that an IPL call-up was not far away.
Support from Dhoni
Francis recalled that Dhoni had supported his son throughout his cricket journey and had even promised that at the auction if no other teams were picking up Minz, CSK would.
At the auctions in Dubai in December 2023, CKS did exactly what Dhoni had promised, opening the bid for Minz as soon as his name came up.
But Minz was eventually bought by Gujarat Titans for a whopping Rs 3.6 crores after a fierce auction.
Francis who continues to work at the airport, carefully checking the IDs of all incoming passengers, is also confident that one day his son will wear the coveted blue jersey of Team India.
