New Madhya Pradesh Government Bans Open Sale Of Meat, Eggs, Restricts Use Of Loudspeakers
Yadav, who assumed office on Wednesday, made the announcement after the first meeting of his cabinet. ¡°Guidelines have been issued by the Government of India on the sale of meat and fish in the open,¡± CM Yadav said.
One of the first orders of business for the newly appointed Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav was to ban the open sale of eggs and meat across the state.
Yadav, who assumed office on Wednesday, made the announcement after the first meeting of his cabinet.
Why open sale of meat, eggs was banned
"After the implementation of food safety rules, guidelines have been issued by the Government of India on the sale of meat and fish in the open. They will be strictly followed," CM Yadav said.
The CM further said that a campaign involving the food department, police, and local urban bodies will be launched to enforce the ban on the open sale of meat and fish from December 15 to 31.
What is the restriction on loudspeakers?
Another decision taken in the first cabinet meeting was to issue a directive prohibiting the use of loudspeakers at religious places beyond permissible decibel levels.
"Guidelines for the use of loudspeakers, based on the orders of the Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal, were also issued for immediate implementation, he said.
Each district will establish a flying squad to monitor sound levels from loudspeakers and DJ systems in religious places.
How Shivraj Singh took eggs away from mid-day meals
The newly-appointed Madhya Pradesh CM seems to be following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who in 2015 had banned the distribution of eggs in Anganwadi meals in the state.
Despite the government's own data showing that forty-two per cent of children under five are malnourished in Madhya Pradesh, Chouhan had repeatedly rejected the call to include eggs, which are a high protein source in the mid-day meals.
The egg ban was briefly revoked in Madhya Pradesh during the short-lived Congress government led by Kamal Nath.
The BJP had criticised the reintroduction of eggs in the children's meals, with Opposition Leader Gopal Bhargava even claiming that the introduction of eggs in midday meals could turn children into cannibals.
He added that "our culture" forbade non-vegetarianism and that no one can be forced to eat eggs.
Following the ousting of the Kamal Nath government, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who returned as the Madhya Pradesh CM, was quick to take eggs from the mid-day meals once again.
What a BJP MLA in Rajasthan is doing
It is not just in Madhya Pradesh; a newly elected BJP MLA in neighbouring Rajasthan had also declared war on the open sale of meat, even before he took the oath.
BJP MLA Balmukund Acharya, who won from Hawa Mahal Assembly seat, was seen going around in his constituency shutting down shops selling meat a day after he was elected.
