The Delhi Police on Friday arrested Ashutosh, the owner of the Baleno car that was involved in the horrific hit-and-run incident in the national capital's Kanjhawala area on New Year's eve.
With this, the number of people held in connection with the death of Anjali Singh, who was mowed down and then dragged on the road for nearly 12km, has gone up to six.
Arrested for giving false information
Hours after the incident, the five men who were in the car at the time of the accident were arrested by the police.
According to the investigators, Ashutosh was arrested for trying to shield the accused.
"In (the) Sultanpuri case, sixth accused Ashutosh has been arrested who had given false information to the police. Further investigation is on," Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda said.
On Thursday, the police said they were looking for two suspects who were allegedly involved in shielding the accused.
The other suspect in the case has been identified as Ankush Khanna, the brother of Amit Khanna, who was arrested earlier.
Amit, not Deepak, was driving
Police said Amit, who did not have a licence, was behind the wheel at the time of the accident on Sunday.
But the Ankush allegedly convinced Deepak Khanna, a Gramin Seva driver, to tell the police that he was behind the wheel at the time of the accident.
As per FIR, Deepak's initially told police that he was driving the car and Manoj Mittal, another accused, was sitting next to him. Mithun, Krishan and Amit were in the rear seat.
However, the interrogation of the accused revealed that Amit was driving the car.
"Ankush is the brother of Amit, and Amit was driving the car at the time of incident. Ankush and Ashutosh both have tampered with the evidence. Ankush, to save his brother, had asked Deepak to tell police that he was driving the car as Amit did not have a driving license," the Commissioner said.
Accused had borrowed the car
The Baleno, originally registered under the name of one Lokesh, was being used by his brother-in-law Ashutosh.
On Sunday evening, Deepak Khanna and Amit Khanna borrowed the car from their friend Ashutosh.
After the collision, they left the vehicle at his residence in an accidental condition. The two told Ashutosh they had drinks and that the car met with an accident with a scooty in the Krishan Vihar area.
Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Thursday extended the police remand of the five accused by four days.
