A resort is under construction in full swing at the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) in Assam completely violating the Supreme Court order banning any construction work on animal corridors.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, construction of the Green Ashiyana Resort is on at the Haldhibari animal corridor of KNPTR.
The construction of the resort has drawn severe criticism from authorities of the Kaziranga National Park. The resort apparently blocks an animal corridor, frequently used by elephants coming down to the park.
"Despite the ban, work in Green Ashiyana Resort is taking place in the Haldhibari animal corridor of KNPTR amid a blame game between the state forest department and local administration", the report adds.
This is the second instance of construction activity near KNTPR.
No new construction, SC order
In April, 2019, Supreme Court acted upon an application by animal activist Rohit Choudhury. It had ¡°restrained¡± all mining activities along the southern boundary of KNPTR and in the entire catchment area of rivers/streams and rivulets originating in Karbi Anglong hill ranges and flowing into the park.
¡°No new construction shall be permitted on private lands which form part of the nine identified animal corridors,¡± the order stated.
However, despite the apex court order, construction in these reserved areas are taking place.
