Health services, except for essential services and casualties, will not be functioning from 6 am on Saturday to 6 am on Sunday, due to the nationwide strike. The IMA has raised a total of five demands, including an overhaul of the working and living conditions of resident doctors and a law to check violence against healthcare professionals.
Hospitals across the country are set for widespread medical service disruptions on Saturday as doctors are observing a 24-hour nationwide strike to protest the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a 24-hour nationwide cease-work protest, halting most health services from Saturday morning to Sunday, demanding justice for the rape and murder victim and better working conditions for doctors.
Non-essential services to be affected
According to the IMA, health services, except for essential services and casualties, will not be functioning from 6 a.m. on Saturday to 6 a.m. on Sunday, due to the nationwide strike.
The IMA has raised a total of five demands, including an overhaul of the working and living conditions of resident doctors and a law to check violence against healthcare professionals.
Five demands of IMA
These are the five demands raised by the IMA:
- An overhaul of the working and living conditions of resident doctors, including the 36-hour duty shift.
- A central act that would incorporate the amendments made in 2023 to the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897 into the proposed Hospital Protection Bill of 2019.
- A meticulous and professional investigation of the crime in a specific time frame and rendering of justice besides identifying those involved in the vandalism of the RG Kar hospital premises on the night of August 14.
- An appropriate and dignified compensation to the bereaved family commensurate with the cruelty inflicted.
- IMA also said that the security protocols of all hospitals should be no less than an airport. Declaring the hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security entitlements is the first step, and CCTV cameras, deployment of security personnel, and the protocols can follow.
