The survivor hadn't mentioned rape while reporting the robbery. After this revelation by Prakash, a police team along with a counsellor went to her house and convinced her to record a statement. She said that she didn't mention rape in her complaint fearing stigma.
Prakash said that he used to climb onto balconies, break open the latches of the door using a screwdriver and enter the house stealthily. When he broke into the businessman's house in northwest Delhi, he found it empty. But when he entered the bedroom, he saw the woman in her 30s sleeping there. He gagged her to stop her from screaming and raped her.
He then jumped out of the balcony with the loot and threatened to harm the woman if she told anyone about the incident. He said that the woman was too shocked to react.

The woman later alerted her neighbours about the burglary. When she went to the police station to register a complaint, she didn't mention rape. A case for theft and trespassing was subsequently registered. However, the complainant raised concerns about women's safety and told the cops that the burglar could easily take advantage of women alone at home, said deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Milind Dumbere.
Police said that Prakash told his accomplice, Ravi, about raping the woman and they decided to break into other houses looking for a similar opportunity.
The burglar claims to have broken into 53 houses and cops suspect he may have sexually assaulted women there as well. IPC sections 376 (rape) and 354 (molestation) have been added to the existing FIR. Other complainants have been approached to find out whether Prakash assaulted women in their homes.
