Body Of Uttarakhand Man Missing In Turkey After Earthquake Found Under Hotel Rubble
Vijay Kumar Gaud was sent to Turkiye on an official assignment by his Bengaluru-based employer Oxy Plant India for the execution and commissioning of a dissolved acetylene gas plant for a gas supply company there. Kumar reached Turkey on January 23 and was staying in Avsar Hotel, a four-star facility in Malatya, in the eastern Anatolia region of Turkey.
The body of Vijay Kumar Gaud, a native Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand who has been missing in Turkey following the devastating earthquake was recovered by the search team on Saturday.
The body of Kumar who had been missing since Monday was found under the rubble of the Avsar Hotel, a four-star facility in Malatya, in the eastern Anatolia region of Turkey where he was staying since reaching the country on January 23.
Found passport, belongings from rubble
His family in India has reportedly identified the body, from tattoo on his left hand.
The body was found a day after there were renewed hopes to find him alive. On Friday rescue workers cleared the rubble of the hotel where he was staying and found Kumar's passport and other belongings.
Was on company assignment
Kumar was sent to Turkey on an official assignment by his Bengaluru-based employer OxyPlant India for the execution and commissioning of a dissolved acetylene gas plant for a gas supply company there.
Spoke to family day before earthquake
According to his brother, Arun Kumar Gaud, also employed in the same company, Kumar was to return to India on February 20.
"His phone rings, but no one responds," Vijay Kumar Gaud's elder brother Arun Kumar Gaud had told PTI.
He said that the family talked to Kumar last on February 5, a day before the quake.
The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday said an Indian was missing and 10 others were stuck but safe in remote regions of Turkey.
India's Operation Dost
India and several other countries and Turkish rescue teams are working round the clock to look for survivors of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria early Monday.
Under Operation Dost, India has sent six planes carrying rescue personnel, essentials, and medical equipment for earthquake relief efforts to Turkey and Syria.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), in coordination with the Turkish Army, rescued an 8-year-old girl from earthquake-hit Turkey on Friday.

The girl was stuck alive under the rubble of a building flattened by the massive earthquake in Nurdagi, Gaziantep, in Turkey.
The Indian Army has also set up a field hospital in Turkey's Hatay to assist the earthquake-affected people.
The death toll so far in one of the worst earthquakes in the region has surpassed 24,000.
