IPL 2024: ACU Cracks Down On Suspected Bookies At Rajasthan Royals Matches In Jaipur And Mumbai
IPL 2024: During the Rajasthan Royals¡¯ home game against Delhi Capitals on March 28, the ACU handed over two suspected bookies to local police from a corporate box. Similarly, on April 1, two suspects were apprehended from the MCA President¡¯s Box at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been keeping a close eye on suspicious activities during the ongoing IPL 2024. In two separate incidents involving the Rajasthan Royals, suspected bookies were removed from venues in Mumbai and Jaipur, The Hindu reported.
During the Rajasthan Royals¡¯ home game against Delhi Capitals on March 28, the ACU handed over two suspected bookies to local police from a corporate box. Similarly, on April 1, two suspects were apprehended from the MCA President¡¯s Box at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
While an FIR was filed against both individuals in Jaipur, the situation in Mumbai took a turn when it was discovered that the two individuals were possibly innocent. According to a Marine Drive Police Station officer, they were released as "nothing untoward was found on their electronic devices".
The ACU acted swiftly based on CCTV and live TV footage, as attending matches in person provides an opportunity for bookies to exploit the short delay between real-time action and live broadcast.
Bookies capitalize on the short window of eight to fifteen seconds between live action in the stadium and its broadcast, exploiting the delay to gain an edge.
This tactic has drawn close scrutiny from the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), especially during events like the IPL where match-fixing allegations have surfaced in the past.
The BCCI is committed to maintaining the integrity of the league and works closely with the ACU to prevent any involvement of corrupt elements.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a BCCI official emphasized that the ACU, with the backing of the BCCI, is "working tirelessly to keep corrupt elements at bay during the IPL".
It's noteworthy that the MCA President¡¯s Box, located directly above the Wankhede Stadium dressing rooms, is exclusively reserved for invitees, with no tickets sold to the general public.
