Total COVID-19 Hospitalizations In New York Drop Below 1000 For The First Time Since March

The worst seems to be over for New York as the state's fight against coronavirus seems to be taking huge strides toward normalcy of sorts, as hospitalizations drop below 1000 for the first time March.

The New York Governor Andrew Cuomo took to Twitter to announce the news.

"Today NY reached a new milestone," Cuomo tweeted. "Total hospitalizations fell to 996 〞 dropping below 1K for the first time since March 18th."

He urged residents to remain vigilant. "Together we bent the curve. And we aren't stopping now. Wear a mask. Keep 6 feet apart. Wash hands. Stay smart," he tweeted.

Parts of New York began slowly reopening last month after successfully "flattening the curve," and New York City 每 once the US' epicenter of the pandemic 每 began reopening several weeks ago after an 80-day lockdown.

The total number of cases New York has seen stood at 389,666 as of Thursday, according to the state's COVID-19 tracker. While the number of people being tested has increased, the number of positive test results in the state has rapidly decreased, the data shows.

Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters on Thursday that the city is on track to enter phase three of reopening as early as July 6, two weeks after it entered phase two.

While cases in New York are on the decline, many other states across the US are seeing an increase in cases. Florida and Texas are setting records for positive tests, and their governors are warning they may need to crack down on people who aren't social distancing.

More than 36,000 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded nationwide on Wednesday, a few hundred shy of the record 36,426 on Apr 24, concentrated on states that were spared the brunt of the initial outbreak or moved early to lift restrictions aimed at curbing the virus spread.
