Over the centuries several mammals have gone extinct. Now it turns out that humans have caused a majority of those extinctions.
As per a report in WION, according to a new study from the US journal Science Advances, humans were responsible for 96% mammal extinctions over 126,000. In addition to this, fossil records show further extinctions of 558 mammal species in the near future.
The study says that based on the human population size, our kind will ¡°undoubtedly pose a serious challenge for the future conservation of biodiversity."
Study says humans responsible
"We find no detectable effect of climate on mammal extinctions throughout the studied time frame. These results stand in contrast to previous support of the hypothesis that the interaction of humans and climate has been driving mammalian extinctions during this same time frame. Human population density increases, on the other hand, have had a large detectable effect on mammal extinctions, explaining past extinctions with 97% accuracy," says the study.
Those conducting the study believe this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Scary thought, right?
So we do not know what the future holds.
By 2100, many more species could go extinct. It is up to us to prevent that.
