An elderly Chinese woman inadvertently caused a 4-hour delay to a China Southern Airlines flight after she tossed a few coins into the aircraft's engine.
The incident was reported from Sanya in Hainan Province on Wednesday.
The woman, said to be in her 80 was scheduled to travel on China Southern Airlines flight CZ8805 from Sanya to Beijing.
Good luck coins turn bad luck for others
But before she boarded the flight, the woman threw a few coins into the engine of the Airbus A350.
It is an old custom in China, and many believe that it will bring good luck.
But in this case, tossing the coins into the aircraft's engine did not bring any good luck but ended up becoming a headache for other passengers and the airline.
As soon as she tossed the coins into the flight's engine, the woman was confronted by an airline staff.
Flight delayed by four hours
Up on inquiring, the woman told the airline staff that she had tossed 3-5 coins into the engine.
Following this, the passenger who threw the coins was taken away by airport police, and the airline's staff managed to retrieve them from the engine.
Uncivilised behaviour: Airline
Later, in a post on Weibo, China Southern Airline issued a statement warning passengers not to take part in ¡°uncivilized behaviors¡±.
¡°Throwing coins at the plane poses a threat to aviation safety and will result in different levels of punishment,¡± it said.
This is not the first time Chinese airlines have been hit by 'lucky coins' tossed by passengers.
Not a problem limited to China
Tossing coins to bring good luck is not a phenomenon limited to China either.
Last month, a zoo in the US state of Nebraska had found 70 coins inside the stomach of one of their white alligators.
According to the zoo, the coins that were found inside the alligator could have been thrown into the water by visitors.
