CBI On The Search As Coins Worth Rs 11 Crore Go 'Missing' From SBI Branch's Vaults In Rajasthan
The CBI is searching 25 locations in connection with Rs 11 crore worth of coins going missing from the vaults of an SBI Branch in Karauli, Rajasthan.
Not bank notes or gold. Coins worth a massive Rs 11 crore have gone missing from an SBI branch. Yesterday the CBI conducted searches at 25 locations in connection with this case of coins missing from the vaults of an SBI branch in Karauli in Rajasthan, as per PTI report.
The searches by CBI were spread across 25 locations in Delhi, Jaipur, Dausa, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Alwar, Udaipur and Bhilwara on the premises of around 15 former bank officials and others.
The matter had come to light after the State Bank of India (SBI) branch decided to carry out counting of money after a preliminary enquiry had initially indicated discrepancy in its cash reserve in August, 2021.
The central agency had registered the case on April 13 this year following an order of the Rajasthan High Court, the officials said.
The counting was outsourced to a private vendor which revealed that over Rs 11 crore worth of coins were missing from the branch.
Only 3,000 coin bags carrying about Rs 2 crore could be accounted for and were transferred to the RBI¡¯s coin holding branch, PTI report mentioned.
Speaking of missing coins, in June 2022, the central government renewed its hunt for the missing "12kg gold coin" after 35 years. The coin has been regarded as the property of the Nizams of Hyderabad and the world's biggest coin ever minted.
And besides this recent curious case of coins worth a mammoth Rs 11 crore going missing, even robbery from bank branches, whether it is of banknotes, coins or gold, is not a new occurrence, and India¡¯s largest public sector bank SBI too, is no exception. In 2016, a gang of thieves had broken into the SBI's sub-branch at PG College campus under Kotwali police station, and stolen coins worth Rs 1 lakh.
Even as recently as nearly a month ago, bike-borne criminals in Alwar had looted Rs 78 lakh cash and gold worth Rs 26 lakh in less than 30 minutes from the Axis Bank branch situated at Riico road of Bhiwadi.
