The latest horror show came against Afghanistan. The newest inductee into Test cricket pulled off an upset ODI win over the 1996 World Cup winners by hammering them by 91 runs.

Now at one end this is great for Afghanistan cricket as they look to make big strides on the big stage. Truth be told they have been a fast improving nation over the last 3 years or so. Good performances in the World Cup and World T20 have earned them the right to play Test cricket. It was baptism by fire as they lost to India in two days on their Test debut, but knowing them, they will look to learn from that experience. The victory over Sri Lanka only emphasises how they are getting better with every match.

But there is another side to this story, one that is not so rosy for international cricket - Sri Lanka's fall. They went down without a fight to Bangladesh and Afghanistan in 2 games and are out of the tournament. One must remember there was a time they dominated the Asia Cup. In fact things are going for bad to worse for them since the 2015 World Cup. Once the likes of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene called it quits, there has been a sudden dip in the Lankan performance. Truth be told, barring Angelo Matthews, there is no player even close to world class in the current side. Sri Lanka used to provide a certain spark in their brand of cricket which was great to watch. Now that spark is gone and it's the fans who are the losers. If they start to lose so easily to the likes of Afghanistan, that means something is seriously wrong.

The win was great for the minnows, but maybe its Sri Lanka who are paying the price of Afghanistan's success. So while it is good news for cricket in general, the fact that a country which was a heavyweight is now struggling to punch even below its weight cannot be ignored.
