A lot of people made recently made use of Facebook¡¯s ¡°Download your Information¡± feature, which drops you an archive of everything you¡¯ve down on the platform.
Now, Instagram has also announced a similar feature you can make use of, should you ever decide you¡¯re done with hashtags.
The ¡°Data Download¡± feature, as it¡¯s called, can be accessed through this link, or from the app¡¯s privacy settings menu. It lets you export ever photo and video you¡¯ve ever uploaded, every archived Story, your profile and information, and even your comments and messages. For good measure, it also packages your contacts, usernames of people you follow as well as your followers, and also your searches and settings.
Of course this is a pretty big data dump, so it could take between a few hours to a few days to finish zipping up, depending on your Instagram usage.
The feature is currently available to all users, but only through the web app for now. They¡¯re still working on rolling out the feature to the iOS and Android apps. It¡¯s not like Instagram had a choice in releasing this feature though. Thanks to the new GDPR privacy law that¡¯s just come into effect in Europe, which is mandatory for all social media networks to comply with.
On the plus side, it means that you don¡¯t have to lose all the effort you¡¯ve put into Instagram if you one day decide you¡¯ve had enough. Indeed, if you download your data you¡¯re ultimately at least left with a backup of your photo archive for however long you were there. That¡¯s particularly handy if there¡¯s a new photo app you want to migrate to, without having to completely start from scratch.
