80 Percent Of Delhi Bus Fleet To Go Electric By 2025: Arvind Kejriwal

Around 80 percent of Delhi¡¯s bus fleet will be switched to electric by the year 2025, according to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, reveals a report by PTI.

He stated that acquiring more electric buses could considerably help in curbing pollution in the national capital. He also shared a roadmap for this procurement, stating that they¡¯ll be purchasing 1,500 such buses in 2023, and around 6,380 buses by 2025.

Kejriwal said in a statement at a ceremony conducted at Rajghat Depot, where he flagged off 50 electric buses, "We have 300 electric buses now. Delhi has 7,379 buses plying on its roads currently which is the highest number of buses plying on the roads in the last 75 years. New buses were not purchased for many years and we were also questioned over it."

According to Kejriwal, out of 7,379 buses, over 4,000 are being operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation, whereas over 3,000 buses are operated via the DIMTS.

Kejriwal added that around 100 electric feeder buses were being managed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, however, since it couldn¡¯t run them, the Delhi government is taking over the corporation¡¯s bus fleet.

By 2025, over 10,000 buses will be on Delhi¡¯s roads and 80 percent of them will be electric, he claimed. As of now, they're in the process of installing charging points for e-buses at depots and three facilities are already functioning.

"By June this year, the work of electrification of 17 bus depots will be completed and by December, 36 bus depots will be electrified," Kejriwal added, while also stating that the buses will get facilities such as panic buttons, GPS, cameras etc.
