Reported first by Patently Apple, Apple has been granted patents on different types of controllers from US¡¯s Patent and Trademark office as well as the European Patent Office. The patent filings discuss three different kinds of game controllers.
The first controller on this list can be attached to the two sides of a device -- maybe an iPhone or even an iPad in either portrait or landscape orientation. The controller easily swaps out and snaps in on both sides, based on the choice of game.
The second type of controller looks like it has been specifically designed for the iPhone. The controller turns the device foldable, with the buttons on the inside. The folding controller also houses a tiny display that¡¯ll accommodate a touch-based keypad as well as show game-related information such as the health of your character, text messages, email notifications etc.
The third controller design has got a Switch-like snappable JoyCons style controller with one analogue stick and a D-pad. From the looks of it, the device could be compatible with not just the iPhone but even the iPads.

There were some more -- one with a traditional controller design with a switchable button at the bottom where the controller can be disabled, in case one wants to take calls or respond to messages. From the images, the controller also seems to have an accelerometer and a gyroscope for motion sensing.
Goes without saying that these patents don¡¯t mean we¡¯ll ever get to see those controllers IRL. However, with mobile gamers taking keen interest in Apple Arcade, Apple probably might have to bring one sooner or later.
