According to Google's latest Chromium source code, a fresh "Double Click Close Tab" feature could make its way to users sometime in the near-future.
Google is reportedly working on adding a new way to close active tabs on its Chrome browser. According to Google's latest Chromium source code, a fresh "Double Click Close Tab" feature could make its way to users sometime in the near-future.
This latest addition will be a mouse input, reports suggest. By a double-click, users would be able to close active tabs quickly. For now, Chrome users may either use the "X" option to close active tabs or use the Ctrl+W shortcut on Windows.
Making tab management easier
This is among Google's latest coterie of features for Chrome. Recently, the US tech giant unveiled Memory and Energy Saver modes to actively reduce power consumption and improve Chrome browser's performance.
A report by Android Police that originated from Twitter user Leopeva64 first suggested that Google Chrome would let users close tabs with a double-click. This feature was spotted in the Chromium source code.

Google is still working on the feature so users would have to wait a little longer before they can use it. It should work how Microsoft Edge lets users close tabs by using the middle mouse button.

Recent updates to Google Chrome include the Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes we referred to above. These features were first rolled out in December, 2022 and may be accessed from the "Performances" tab on Chrome's sidebar. The Memory Saver feature prioritises active Chrome tabs and reduces memory usage by deactivating inactive tabs.
The Energy Saver add-on will save battery life of your system when you're using Chrome. These features are turned on by default and users can disable them from settings if they're not working as expected.
