India Accounted For 20% Of All Global Mobile App Downloads In 2021, Taking Top Spot
App Annie has revealed the global app download trajectory, with India taking the top spot for all app downloads in 2021 on smartphones
The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has provided a boost to digital economies and consumption of all-things-digital. Most people succumbed to mobile gaming while others used their smartphone devices to learn a new skill or to hone a hobby.
According to app trends shared by App Annie, the world collectively spent a projected $135 billion on mobile applications. India dominated the global app industry with most downloads across both Android and iOS.
A 25 per cent increase in app downloads
Globally, a rise of 25 per cent was noted by App Annie for the year 2021, with the market expected to hit $135 billion before the year ends. Last year, the estimated number of app downloads spending stood at $112 billion.
There are stark differences for iOS and Android - 65 cents for each app came from Apple's iOS ecosystem. Gamers accounted for the most spending - accounting for 60 per cent of all iOS revenue and a whopping 80 per cent of all money spent on Google Play Store.

Outside of gaming, over a third of all app revenue now comes from entertainment and social apps. App Annie predicts that entertainment apps will earn $12 billion in 2022.
In terms of app downloads, about 140 billion new app downloads were recorded in 2021 - 10 billion more than in 2020, and 20 billion more than downloads in 2019. Most of these downloads took place on Google Play Store. About 100 billion of the 140 billion new app downloads happened within the Google ecosystem.
India's app obsession continues
India topped the download charts! 20 per cent of all app downloads across iOS and Google Play Store came from India. The United States accounted for 9 per cent of all downloads, followed by Brazil at 8 per cent.

Three India-specific apps were among the top 10 "Breakout Downloads list." These were MX TakaTak, Meesho, and Share Karo India.
