Meta Unveils SAM, An AI Tool That Lets You Select Objects Within Images

In 2023, another month can only mean one thing - a new artificial intelligence tool! Mark Zuckerberg's Meta has unveiled a new AI tool called SAM that lets users select individual objects from within an image.
The Segment Anything Model (SAM) is able to identify objects in images and videos even if those images were not encountered by the tool in its training. SAM also comes with a dataset of image annotations, the company's research division said in a blog post.

Users can select objects by using SAM. In addition, they can also write text prompts to perform the same tasks. For instance, writing the word "cat" in a demonstration prompted SAM to draw boxes around each cat in the picture.
Given the hype of AI tools, propelled by ChatGPT and the more advanced GPT 4.0 - both created by OpenAI, Big Tech giants like Meta and Microsoft are cashing in on the hype. Microsoft has gone far enough to imbibe ChatGPT's capabilities into its Bing search engine along with its Office suite.

Meta is currently working on a myriad of tools that are focused on artificial intelligence - including a tool that creates surrealist videos from text prompts and another one that generates children's book illustrations from prose, Reuters reported.

After hyping its metaverse ambitions (that seem to have fizzled out), Zuckerberg has vowed to incorporate AI "creative aids" into Meta's apps by the end of this year.

AI is already in use across the tech world, though, including in Meta. To moderate prohibited content and for recommendation purposes on Instagram and Facebook, Meta already uses artificial intelligence tech similar to SAM.

Its official release would broaden the access to such technology, Meta said. The SAM model would be available for download under a non-commercial license and users who upload their own pictures would have to agree to use it only for research purposes.
