PM Narendra Modi's Twitter Account Hacked Hours After PUBG Ban

Twitter account of our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi was hacked a few hours ago, with hackers posting tweets and asking people to donate money to ¡®PM Relief Fund For COVID-19¡¯ through cryptocurrency.

The account in question was PM Modi¡¯s personal account with the handle @narendramodi_in. Hackers took control of the account and tweeted ¡°I appeal to you all to donate generously to PM National Relief Fund for COVID-19. Now India will begin with cryptocurrency.¡± this was followed by a Bitcoin link for donation.

A Twitter spokesperson said in a statement to ET, ¡°We're aware of this activity and have taken steps to secure the compromised account. We are actively investigating the situation. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted." The account has now been restored.

This is the first instance of the cyber breach since the massive hacking spree that took place in July that affected the accounts of several businessmen and politicians in the US including Bill Gates, Barrack Obama, Elon Musk and several others.

Twitter has said that this time there is no indication that there is any sort of correlation between this attack and the ones that took place in the month of July which also seeked donation using Bitcoin.

After the aforementioned tweets, the account tweeted ¡°This account is hacked by John Wick (hckindia@tutanota.com) we have not hacked PayTM Mall¡± the message stated.

On August 30, cybersecurity firm Cyble had revealed that John Wick hacker group was responsible for the massive data breach on e-commerce website PayTM mall where the security firm claims that the hackers got access to company¡¯s database. This was however denied by PayTM.

Just hours ago, the government of India went ahead and banned PUBG Mobile from apps stores in India on the gounds of breaching data privacy of users, along with 118 more apps. This caused quite an uproar with the youth who loved playing the game for hours.
