Emotion Recognition Tech Linked To Our Face Is Wrong And Must Be Banned, Says AI Research Group
According to AI Now, machine learning is being used by facial recognition systems in various places like testing candidates during interviews, in VR headsets to determine a gamer¡¯s emotional state. The industry is estimated to be valued at a whopping $20 billion.
Artificial Intelligence is getting smarter and smarter every day. It is being applied in various walks of life with facial recognition being the most prominent one.
Under facial recognitions, researchers are testing the system to capture the emotions of people to target specific outcomes. However, research institute AI Now feels that it should be banned from use in places where it can affect people¡¯s lives with harmful social effects.
According to AI Now, machine learning is being used by facial recognition systems in various places like testing candidates during interviews, in VR headsets to determine a gamer¡¯s emotional state. The industry is estimated to be valued at a whopping $20 billion.
It takes example of HireVue -- the interviewee emotion recognition system that is currently being equipped by employers like Uniliver, Hilton etc. The Electronic Privacy Information Centre has filed a complained against HireVue to the US Federal Trade Commission after it stated that the system isn¡¯t fully capable of making accurate predictions based on a candidate¡¯s emotion recognition.
They worry that the algorithms by HireVue are designed to pick traditional white male candidates ideal, making it difficult for people of colour or with English not as their native language.
The report also talks about another recent academic analysis of studies on how people interpret moods depending on the facial expression. The paper revealed that many of the perceptions were unreliable for multiple reasons primarily because every person reacts in his own unique way depending on his emotion, gender, culture etc and it¡¯s more dynamic than it seems.
Dangers of facial recognition
The report also speaks about the dangers of facial recognition, pointing at Amazon¡¯s ¡®Rekognition¡¯ facial recognition system that has touted that it can detect fear among other emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, disgust, confusion and calm.
AI Now feels that the physical appearance of the face cannot determine the actual feeling of the person.
