Sony's flagship earbuds from 2021 have been suffering battery troubles. An XM4 user posted on Reddit that one of their earbuds exploded in the case without any warning.
If you've been using Sony's WF-1000XM4 earbuds, this might be of interest to you. Turns out, Sony's flagship earbuds from 2021 have been suffering battery troubles. An XM4 user posted on Reddit that one of their earbuds exploded in the case without any warning.
The Reddit post was spotted by AndroidPolice. Based on a few images shared by u/yangcong1982, it appears that an explosion shook Sony's flagship earbuds, splitting it into two halves along the seam that is sealed with an adhesive.
If you look at the pictures, there are no visible signs of combustion and it doesn't seem that the incident caused any harm to the user. Even then, the earbuds are not usable anymore.
What really happened to the earbuds?
According to the user who experienced this mishap first hand, the buds were in their charging case for two days before the explosion took place. As AndroidPolice stated, this means that misuse wasn't the cause of the explosion.
The reddit user was charging their buds with an Anker power bank, and the batteries were 80% charged. This means that overcharging can also be ruled out as a probable cause.

In addition, the user stated that the right earbud would discharge completely even when the left one has 20-40% charge left. This gap eventually widened. It's noteworthy to mention that the buds were running firmware version 1.4.2 that is known for causing battery life issues.
In December 2022, Sony released a firmware update for the WF-1000XM4 earbuds that specifically addresses battery problems. Currently, Sony is in touch with the Redditor to resolve the issue.
