This Year's iPhone XI Will Have Triple Camera With A Horrible Bump, But Will You Still Buy It?

That's the render OnLeaks released. It's pretty weird to say the least. Now, we've supposedly got confirmation of what the temporarily-named iPhone XI looks. The guys over at Japanese website Macotakara, a very reputable tech source, claim they gleaned information from contacts within Apple's China supply chain. And they have an updated render of what the new iPhone will look like.
Yup, it's almost the same as predicted, except the cameras and LED flash are arranged in a square. As awful as that entire module looks though, at least it's not all over the place like the previous alignment.
At the time OnLeaks revealed the design he suspected, he was ridiculed for suggesting a look that Apple would clearly think too ugly to actually implement. I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
For one thing, the gigantic camera bump goes against Apple's whole minimalist schtick. And can you imagine,if you don't have a cover on it, placing your iPhone down flat? It's going to be sitting at an angle resting on the camera housing. God, that would drive me crazy.
Even more important to note here is that this isn't even a unique design. Huawei's already done this with the Mate 20 Pro, though their camera square was more centrally located on the rear and seemed to be less protruding. And Apple is usually not one to follow the crowd as far as design aesthetics go, so this is certainly a surprise.
It is still possible this device's render is incorrect of course, though the likelihood seems low given the corroborating evidence. On top of that, the new iPhones do not support 5G, which is still fine given how long it'll take to implement the infrastructure needed for it. However, they reportedly still won't have fast charging.
Apple, what gives?
At the very least, this additional third camera is expected to bring some added functionality to the iPhone. The third lens is rumoured to be using a 'time of flight' (TOF) system. This basically involves new sensors that vastly improve the depth-sensing capabilities of the camera. That means better autofocus, an improved ability to scan objects into 3D images, and better AR app capablities.
But if the company wants to reverse the slowing rate of iPhone purchases across the world, they have to make a bold move like never before. A foldable iPhone, which it's been rumoured Apple is working on, could do the trick, but I don't see that manifesting into a device on shelves till at least next year.
In the meantime, this particular iPhone isn't looking like too exciting an upgrade.
