WhatsApp Testing Individual Chat Lock Feature For Added Security

WhatsApp could soon let you lock individual chats, an Android beta update suggests. If you use WhatsApp for confidential conversations or are just wary of privacy concerns in general, this feature that is currently being tested might come in handy in the near-future, if it makes its way to the app.

The Meta-owned app could let users lock their specific chats through their fingerprint or passcode, a WhatsApp for Android beta v2.23.8.2 showed, WABetaInfo reported.

Added layer of security

Currently, WhatsApp allows users to lock the app through a Face ID, fingerprint, or a passcode for added protection. But that could be a hassle for someone who uses the app extensively and wants to lock certain chats that could carry sensitive information. Even though end-to-end encryption keeps your chat free from interception, this added layer of security could prevent any mishaps in case of loss.

WABetaInfo

Currently, the feature is rolling out exclusively via the Google Play Beta Programme. Besides offering the ability to keep certain chats private, the potential feature would also lock images and videos in that particular chat - never automatically saving any media in the phone gallery.

Just like "Archives" on WhatsApp, the locked chats would appear in a separate section within the app, beta screenshot (seen above) show. This feature could become available in a future update, or not - many beta features make it to the actual app while others don't.

WhatsApp is also working on a dedicated audio chat feature along with the ability to edit texts as seen in a previous beta version.
