Mountainous regions of India have been observing a better than average snow and rainfall this winter season. So much so that the Met Department has already issued a warning to some of the states about the impending weather and to be at guard with apt measures.
These measures are mostly against the loss of lives, disruption of basic necessities like electric or water supply and even more importantly, commute. Snow on the roads is an alliance that no driver would want or rather, should face.
However, since movement on the roads is indispensable irrespective of the weather, we are equipped with specific machinery to outdo such restrictions. And if in case you have ever wondered how these machines work, this video of a snow clearing operation in J&K¡¯s Mughal Road, Rajouri will give you a hint.

The heavy duty piece of machine seen in the video is called a snow plough (or snowplow). The way a snow plough works is very basic. Consider it an oversized blade that pushes the snow aside from the area it sweeps, clearing path in the process. At times, snow ploughs are also equipped with sweeper brooms and blowers at the back.
Note that the term ¡®snow plough¡¯ is for the blade and not the vehicle, though it is generally used in that sense only. By themselves, the vehicle are called ¡®Winter Service Vehicles¡¯. You might have seen such snow ploughs attached to the front of trains as well, for clearing snow from the path as it moves.
But wait, snow ploughs are not the only machines that help. Another anti-snow arsenal that humans have are the snow blowers, which instead of shoving them out of the way, suck the snow in through a blower and eject it on the sides, often up to the lengths of 10 feet or more. Check out this hilarious video where a lady is seen overdoing a snow blower a bit too much.

Some of the snow ploughs and blowers also use salt to melt down the left out snow on the roads. The machines are usually appointed as per their capacity and the corresponding snowfall in the area. So the next time you see a clear road in the middle of a snow covered area, you know who to thank.
