What Happens To Our Brain When We're Dying? Scientists Solve The Riddle
According to a paper published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, the researchers got a chance to observe what happens to a dying brain
Scientists have successfully captured the brain activity of a dying person, offering a glimpse into what happens to the brain during a person's death.
Life does flash before your eyes when you die, scientists found. Scientists were studying the brain of an 87-year-old epilepsy patient using an electroencephalography (EEG) device when the patient had a heart attack and died during the study.
What happens to a dying brain?
According to a paper published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, the researchers got a chance to observe what happens to a dying brain.
They found that as the person was dying, there was an increase in brain waves known as gamma oscillations. These occur during dreaming and memory retrieval. In essence, the person was seeing glimpses of their life flash before them when they died.

"Through generating oscillations involved in memory retrieval, the brain may be playing a last recall of important life events just before we die, similar to the ones reported in near-death experiences," said Dr. Ajmal Zemmar from University of Louisville, the lead author of the study.
Besides offering us a peek into what the brain does as a person dies, this could also offer better understanding of the "timing of organ donation," Zemmar said in a press release.

It's important to note here that the study is not expansive and only took into account one dying person's experience. The fact that he had a history of seizures and brain swelling could have had some impact on the results.
Zemmar claimed that more research is needed to understand what the brain goes through during death, but this offers an interesting insight into what might happen during death.
