A split in a field in Scotland has revealed an eerie underground blaze, which has left locals concerned.
Footage shows a red-hot burning rock and plumes of smoke in a former caravan park in Ayrshire, Scotland. Photos and videos of the lava-like glowing rock have been going viral.
Tom Paton, who filmed the footage, said it has become a cause of worry for wildlife and people who go into the field with their pets.
"It's concerning for wildlife and for people who go up there with their dogs because if you don't already know it's there then it isn't too obvious to see," Paton told The Herald.
"The smell is potent, but the actual hole in the ground is well hidden until you're right on it. I've got three young boys and the eldest goes up around another part of that field with his friends sometimes, so it is a worry what could happen if something isn't done," he added.
The clip appears to show molten rock visible through a patch of scorched grass, despite frigid temperatures in the area. Plumes of smoke can be seen pouring from cracks in the charred earth - but the site hasn't been cordoned off.
Paton said that the Scottish Coal Board has erected a fence around the affected area, but he thinks it may not be enough to prevent other dangers.
A representative for the local council said the fire had been blocked off, before being removed by ¡°unknown parties, which clearly isn¡¯t helpful.¡±
Officials were in touch with the landowner and the United Kingdom¡¯s Coal Authority.
¡°The council will continue to engage with the relevant parties to ensure they fulfil their respective obligations, and in the meantime would advise members of the public to avoid the affected area.¡±
