Kashmir has been draped white after fresh snowfall. Light to moderate snowfall started in many parts of Kashmir on Friday evening. A thick carpet of snow has enveloped the valley much to the delight of the tourists and locals.
On Saturday, all the 40 scheduled flights were cancelled due to heavy snowfall that reduced visibility at the Srinagar airport.
"All the 40 flights scheduled to operate at the Srinagar airport had to be cancelled due to snowfall," an official of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) told PTI on Saturday.
The valley is currently under the grip of 'Chillai-Kalan' ¡ª the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably. It is followed by a 20-day long ¡®Chillai Khurd¡¯ and a 10-day-long ¡®Chilla Bachha¡¯.
The chances of snowfall are the most frequent and maximum during Chillai-Kalan and most areas, especially in the higher reaches, receive heavy snowfall.
Meteorological department has urged people not to venture into avalanche-prone areas, follow traffic advisory seriously as well as maintain proper ventilation of their rooms.
The weather has slightly improved in the last few days and the MeT department bringing some respite to people.
The MeT office said that Light Rain/ Snow may occur at scattered places of J&K, especially over eastern parts during next 24 to 48hrs. Thereafter, weather likely to remain dry till 16th January.
