NASA shared the video of the solar eclipse on its official X channel for viewers to witness.

Reportedly, this is the first time in nearly a century that the western and northern regions of New York State experienced a total eclipse.

A striking image unfolded from the vantage point of space: a dark shadow gradually traversing the continent. The International Space Station (ISS) captured this remarkable spectacle as the path of totality extended from Mazatlan, Mexico, to Newfoundland, Canada, spanning 15 US states.

While total solar eclipses occur globally every 11 to 18 months, witnessing one from the Earth's surface remains rare.

The most recent occurrence in the US transpired in 2017, with the next anticipated in 2045. During a total solar eclipse, the moon positions itself between the sun and the earth, obscuring much of the sun's light.

Despite the sun's immense size compared to the moon, the latter's distance from Earth creates a similar apparent size during the eclipse.

This alignment results in the moon neatly covering the entirety of the sun, leaving only its fiery periphery visible. NASA shared the ISS video with the caption, "Ever seen a total solar eclipse from space? Here is our astronauts' view from the Space Station."

According to Forbes, the solar eclipse on April 8 lasted four minutes and 26 seconds at the Mexico-US border in Texas. This event marked North America's first total solar eclipse in six years, seven months, and 18 days. Specific fortunate locales such as Perryville and Cape Girardeau in Missouri, Paducah in Kentucky, and Carbondale, Du Quoin, Marion, Makanda, Harrisburg, and Metropolis in Illinois had the unique experience of witnessing totality twice: first on August 21, 2017, and then again on April 8, 2024.
