Shocking images of a baby elephant being forced to beg for money from tourists in Thailand are going viral. And they're pretty unsettling.
A Brit ex-patriate is desperately trying to free the baby. Ross Martin claims that he has seen the elephant called Meena being hit by her owner with a stick with a bullhook on the end. He believes that she does not even get fresh water or food.
The Thai boxing coach, who teaches in Phuket, said that when alone the calf¡¯s feet were tied together so she couldn¡¯t even lie down to rest. He believes that the elephant he has been observing for the past two years is being forced to beg tourists for money.
Metro reports that Ross has set up an online petition and is working with charity Thailand Elephants to free the baby.
However, according to the report, Thai authorities have claimed that the elephant is healthy and legally registered and found no cause to press charges.
Ross wrote on campaign site Care2 Petitions ¡®As far as I can see she has no access to fresh water or food and is completely on her own. As elephants are highly social animals, this can only be causing her anguish. To think that she¡¯s only young and this is how she spends her life is pretty heartbreaking¡¯.
He believes that the baby elephant is distressed and he is doing all he can to get her free. Do your bit and sign the petition today.
