While Eating Out, American Couple Found Pearl Worth Thousand Dollars In Their Usual Order Of Clam Appetiser
Maria and Michael Spressler found a pearl that could be worth thousands of dollars while enjoying a clam appetizer at their favourite restaurant in New Jersey, USA.
What are the chances of you going to eat at your usual restaurant and finding something that may change your life for the better in your food? Yes, we're not talking about finding a fly in your soup but what if you found something rare that may make you rich. That happened to a couple.
A couple from New Jersey, USA was out to eat at their favourite restaurant to celebrate their wedding anniversary. They ordered their usual clam appetiser and found a literal pearl in it.
For their 34th anniversary, Maria and Michael Spressler dined at The Lobster House in Cape May the way they usually have been doing since the year 1987. But their clam appetiser felt different to Michael.
He told KYW-TV, "I was down to the 12th one and when I picked it up on the fork it looked kinda heavy, but I didn¡¯t think anything of it. Then when I started to eat it I noticed something was in my mouth. I actually thought one of my tooth broke."
Fortunately for Michael, it was a pearl.
"He¡¯s eaten dozens and dozens of clams and we¡¯ve never found anything like that so it was pretty exciting," said Maria.
According to reports, the 8.8-millimetre pearl could be worth a thousand dollars. However, the couple doesn't want to sell it. ¡®I would like to have it set into a nice piece of jewellery, maybe a mermaid or something nautical,¡¯ Maria said. ¡®It¡¯s a beautiful remembrance of that day and what we have is so special.¡¯
The famous restaurant is celebrating its centennial year. A Lobster House employee, Sarah Stadnicar, had never seen anything like it herself. ¡°I have worked here for around 10 years now and I¡¯ve never heard of someone finding one in one of our oysters or clamshells."
This rare find has also inspired the employee to start eating clams and oysters since she's never tried it. "I¡¯ve never had raw clams or oysters. But since somebody found something I may have to give it a shot," she said.
It is a misconception that pearls are just found in oysters. All molluscs, including oysters, mussels and clams can technically make pearls. Most of them are, however, cultured pearls which are a lot less worth than natural pearls. It mostly depends on their shape, size and texture.
