New York Man Tracks Down His Stolen Rs 3 Crore Rolls-Royce Using A Kill Switch

What started as a home break-in ended with the property owner beating the burglars at their own game, and recovering his own $400,000 (Rs 3.13 crore) Rolls-Royce.

The incident took place in Staten Island, New York when crooks broke into a man's home and grabbed a set of car keys which belonged to a 2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn sedan., New York Post, citing New York Police Department, reported.

The owner of the house, identified only as John, was awoken by an alarm and caught a glimpse of the thieves speeding off in his Rolls-Royce Dawn sedan convertible.

¡°I was downstairs within seconds while they were pulling out of the driveway,¡± John told the Staten Island Advance.

After making sure his family was safe, he logged onto a computer and used the luxury car's built-in tracking device to locate the vehicle in real-time as the thieves drove toward New Jersey.

Man activated car's remote kill switch

He then made good use of the technology - activating the car's remote kill switch, which is used to disable the vehicle¡¯s ignition from any location. This meant that thieves were left stranded as the car stopped working.

¡°They were attempting to turn [the car] back on, but they couldn¡¯t because I disabled it,¡± John said.

He then pinpointed the specific block where the thieves ditched the car and picked it up.

Last month, a woman in the UK took matters into her own hands to track down her stolen car even before the police investigation.

Michelle Almond, from Manchester, England, took the drastic measure owing to the police taking longer to attend to her complaint, the BBC reported.

While the woman felt forced to track down her stolen car, she had to face significant risks to her safety. Not least, being threatened by a man with a crowbar.

Michelle told BBC that she felt compelled to turn to social media for help when thieves stole the car.

After reporting the theft and giving the statement, she rang the police multiple times a day but to no avail. But she finally had some luck after someone responded to her post about the theft, saying they had seen the car being taken for a joyride around the nearby area and that it had been recorded on their CCTV.

Michelle then decided to track down the car herself. The next night she drove to the spot where the car had been spotted and found it parked in front of a house. While she informed the police about the location of the car, no officer was sent to the scene.

Another night, she came across the car again while it was on the move and decided to follow in her daughter's car.

As she was following the car, it entered a dead end at one point. After coming to a stop, the man exited the stolen car and confronted them with a crowbar. Michelle had to quickly reverse up the street to escape.

The car was later found abandoned among hedges with its windows smashed in.
