Compassion Without Borders: Sydney Firefighters Battling Bush Fire Served Home-Made Food By Sikhs
Bush fires have been raging across New South Wales NSW and Queensland. The ferocity and early arrival of this years fires has caught many by surprise. Dozens of local Sikhs brought food and water to residents and firefighters before worshiping in a nearby temple. The Sikh community has on many occasions gone beyond their means to remind us all that kindness courage and compassion is all that matters.
For weeks now, bush fires have been raging across New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, leaving a trail of destruction.
Bush fires are a common and deadly threat in Australia's hot, dry summers, but the ferocity and early arrival of this year's fires in the southern hemisphere spring, has caught many by surprise.
In order to contain and douse the flames, brave firefighters are doing everything they can. Obviously, it's taking a lot of physical and mental labour, so people are doing their best to look out for them.
The Guru Nanak Gurudwara Turramurra Sikh Temple on Turramurra¡¯s Kissing Point Road, offered free food and water, to Hornsby firefighters working round the clock to contain the fire.
Dozens of local Sikhs brought food and water to residents and firefighters, before worshiping in a nearby temple.
The firefighter brigade thanked the Sikh Community on Facebook saying, 'A huge thanks to the Guru Nanak Gurudwara Turramurra Sikh Temple Sydney for providing meals to our hungry firefighters!! Pictured here are the crews from Hornsby 1 and Hornsby 7 enjoying their meals after bringing the Canoon Road fire under control'.
"As the firefighting operations were drawing to a close at the Canoon RpadFire in South Turramurra, we were approached by members of the local Sikh community with donations of hot food for our firefighters," Captain Theo Klich told SBS News.
"They brought along two types of curry and water, and other residents also brought out water, juice and soft drinks."
Blazes have been spurred by extremely dry conditions, and after three years of drought in parts of NSW and Queensland, which experts say has been exacerbated by climate change.
The current outbreak - which killed three people and destroyed more than 150 homes over the weekend - has been fanned by an unprecedented combination of high temperature and strong winds, reports Reuters.
From setting up 'langar' in IS territory and feeding refugees at the Iraq-Syria border, to providing food to the helpless victims of the Nepal earthquake, the Sikh community has on many occasions, gone beyond their means to remind us all that kindness, courage and compassion is all that matters at the of the day.
